From what I’ve read over the past few hours regarding the Newton school shooting, the shooter, Ryan Lanza, was a young, angry man at odds with the world and his parents.
I went onto his twitter feed last night and what I read was utter rage against the world, against his parents and peers. Here was a young man who clearly felt he had no voice, who felt he wasn’t being heard…
His mother was a victim in the shooting. Her son walked into a classroom and shot her.
News reports say that he’d shot his father before going to the school.
Until the story unfolds and the investigators have done their work we will know very little of this man’s life, of the story behind the story.
Who were his parents and how had this young man been raised? Did he have cause to be so angry and vengeful? We may never know.
What I do know is that events like this can be true reminders of just how important the job of a parent is.
As the world grieves for the innocent victims of this shooting, let’s heed the warning…our children need to be heard. They need to be nurtured. They need to be loved.
Our children need our time. They need to see our smiles, hear words of praise, assurance and encouragement.
If you do one thing today, let it be this: look your child in the eyes and tell her she is loved and that she is safe in your arms.
